An Introduction to Vispring

vispring

We’re all different. What we need in terms of comfort, support and style means that buying a bed is an incredibly personal process. This is something that Vispring honours, across every aspect of their bed manufacturing process.

Pioneers of the pocket spring

Their story began over a century ago. In 1899 a British engineer, James Marshall, sought a new mattress solution after his wife was taken ill. He handmade this mattress himself, and in doing so, did something a little different from what others had done before. Wrapping coiled springs in muslin, he initiated the birth of the famous pocket-sprung mattress we all know and love today.

Time-honoured luxury

The revolutionary design was brought over to Britain in 1901 by John Nolan and Frederick James, who set about producing this new mattress style commercially. Before not too long, the mattresses were becoming highly recognised for their elite comfort. In 1911, luxury ocean liners including Titanic and Olympic became Vispring’s first major orders as the new era of mattresses took its place on some of the world’s finest ships. Today, you can find Vispring beds and mattresses in some of the world’s leading hotels, including The Dorchester, The Beverly Hills Hotel and The Principe di Savoia, just to name a few.

In 2012, after decades of innovation and countless bespoke mattresses, Vispring was given the Queen’s Award for Enterprise. The award honours any business that has excelled in the fields of international trade, innovation or sustainable development.

What makes a Vispring bed so special

Nature-born bed design
Over years of research and product development, Vispring has crafted sleep experiences designed to perfection. And, whilst technology has advanced, this is a bed brand that has remained committed to creating beds that are naturally wholesome in design. Shetland wool, pure cotton, silk and cashmere are just a few of the nature-born quality materials you can expect to find nestled inside a Vispring design.

Handcrafted luxury
Every Vispring bed and mattress is crafted by hand by a team of bedmakers. This intricate and expert level of craftsmanship means that Vispring ensures only the best quality every single time.

Bespoke luxury comfort
Since its creation, the pocket spring has revolutionised mattress design by providing tailored support and bespoke comfort levels needed for perfect sleep. Vispring takes care to consider everything that goes into helping you to achieve an unmatched sleep environment, from the hand tufting of a mattress to the colour choices and headboard material options available.

Feel-good throughout
With a deep-rooted commitment to supporting the British farming industry, Vispring prioritises local materials and manufacturing close to home in their Plymoth-based bed factory. They take extra care to make conscious and ethical choices in their material resourcing whilst continuing to work towards their sustainability goal of becoming carbon neutral.

How to choose a Vispring bed

When we talk about buying a Vispring bed, it often helps to clear up any confusion regarding exactly what that means. A Vispring bed is made up of two components;

  • The bed base, also known as the divan base
  • The mattress

When buying a Vispring bed, there are plenty of additional personalised features to choose from such as the headboard style, leg style and storage options. But, as a rule of thumb, when you buy a Vispring bed, you are buying both the mattress and the divan base.

To maintain the warranty on your Vispring purchase, you must buy the recommended bed base with the recommended mattress, and vice versa. That’s because these two core bed components have been carefully designed and expertly crafted to work together, to provide the optimum support needed to ensure that the bed feels great for years to come.

Choosing the right Vispring mattress

Before you buy a Vispring mattress, you should consider:

Your sleep style
Do you sleep on your back, front or side? Your sleep position is generally the position that you wake up in, or find most comfortable when falling asleep. Your sleep position will impact the tension, spring count and fillings that you choose.

Who you are sharing a bed with
When sharing a bed with someone else, it’s important to fully address how much space one another truly needs. Some of us are natural starfish sleepers, others take the diagonal sleep position. You’ll need to consider your required sleep space when choosing a bed size. You’ll also have to understand how one another’s sleep needs differ; do you both require the same level of support or would a split tension mattress provide a more restful night’s sleep for you both?

Try before you buy
There is no better way to truly find the best Vispring mattress than visiting a bed store and seeing and experiencing the different mattresses for yourself. Beds Are Uzzz has 7 showrooms across the UK, each of which features a selection of Vispring beds and mattresses to sample.

Vispring mattress tensions

First, establish which mattress tension you need. Your required spring tension will depend on two main factors; your sleep position and body weight

Vispring offers four different spring tensions to choose from including soft, medium, firm and extra firm.

As a rule of thumb, use the following to match body weight to spring tension requirements;

Up to 11 stone (70kg): Soft
11-16 stone (70-102kg): Medium
16-20 stone (102-127kg): Firm
Above 20 stone (127kg): Extra Firm

As mentioned, your sleep position can also influence your required mattress tension. Side sleepers may benefit more from a softer to medium tension mattress that offers more cushioning on the shoulders and hips, whilst back and front sleepers may benefit from a firmer mattress that supports the bottom of the back.

How to check if a Vispring mattress is supporting you correctly

As we sleep, we need to aim for straight spinal alignment.

If a mattress is too soft:

  • the hips of a side sleeper will dip too low into the mattress
  • the bottom of the back of a back sleeper may dip and sink too low into the mattress

On the other hand, if a mattress is too firm,

  • the spine may bow upwards on a side sleeper, causing shoulder and knee pressure
  • The top and the bottom of the spine should be aligned and straight from top to bottom.

What happens if me and my sleep partner have different tension requirements?

This is a very normal issue many couples face, but it just goes to show that we really are all different in what we need from our mattress.

One of the key benefits of buying a hand-crafted Vispring mattress is that you can combine two tensions for each side of the bed, ensuring that both sleepers are suitably and comfortably accommodated for.

And, if you and your sleep partner have major differences in tension requirements, Vispring offers a zip-and-link mattress solution, which means you and your partner can share a bed, whilst both sleeping in the comfort of knowing your mattress is supporting you in the best way possible.

How long does a Vispring mattress last?

After choosing and investing in your Vispring sleep upgrade, you’ll want to ensure that it lasts. Thankfully, you can sleep well knowing that your new mattress comes with a 30-year guarantee against structural failure, faulty workmanship and defective components. It is, however, important that you take good care of your mattress and follow Vispring’s divan pairing guidelines to ensure that your mattress is supported correctly from the word go.

Choosing the right Vispring divan base

All Vispring mattresses should be brought with their supporting bed base or divan. However, that by no means limits your choice when it comes to personalising the look and feel of your new bed.

Vispring put just as much thought, care and skilled craftsmanship into divan design as they do their mattresses to provide as much personalisation as possible. The divans are also handmade using natural materials, some of which include coir, blended fleece wool and cotton, all brought together using quality ticking or upholstery fabric.

Benefit from extra pocket springs

Vispring divan bases also include hand-nested pocket spring systems which offer unbeatable mattress support. The type of mattress you choose will influence the divan pocket spring count.

Select your divan style and size

Once again, Vispring caters for all different types of sleepers when it comes to the choice of divan styles and sizes available. There are a plethora of divan heights available. Consider whether you like a bed with a lower platform or something that feels like more of a step up to get into bed. Vispring beds are also available in sizes small through to emperor, to match their complementary mattress. You may also wish to consider a divan base that offers an extra element of personalised comfort, in the form of an adjustable divan. These are to be paired with a suitable Vispring adjustable mattress.

Select your upholstery and headboard design

You’ve also got a fantastic range of choices when it comes to selecting from Vispring’s fabric swatches. Take your time to select a material and colour to create a bed that not only provides unmatched comfort but also looks truly stunning within your own personal sleep space. There’s lots of flexibility to find a design that complements your decor, or better still, ensures your bed takes centre stage in your sleep space. Vispring also offers a range of headboard designs, from high headboards to more traditional-style headboard designs, so you’re sure to achieve the desired bedroom style, without any compromise.

Space for storage

A Vispring bed is also a superb opportunity to optimise your bedroom storage capacity. Divans are available either without drawer storage or with one, two or four storage drawers. Alternatively, if storage is a top priority, you may wish to consider a Vispring ottoman divan, which offers the perfect solution for creating a clutter-free bedroom space.

Added extras

Want to add more personalisation to your Vispring divan? Take your pick from a range of different leg styles. And, when buying your Vispring bed, you may also consider buying a mattress topper. This is used to provide mattress protection, whilst adding even more customisable comfort to the mattress surface.
